Field Observations of Ecology: Ant’s community
I have chosen to conduct this observation in the mid way of the trail of the Griffith Park where there are less disturbance of human and noisy car engines. The area is what I believe the greenest part of the park. It is few meters away from human intervention and the street. This is very peaceful and there are a lot of grass, flower pants and trees surrounding this area. I think people often come to this part of the park, that why I could hardly see and human trash within its vicinity. There I have found a community of ants in such a great number who are busy trying to carry a much bigger size dead insect to their colony located on the top part of the tree. By their numbers, I could tell that they have been nesting with that area for quite sometimes.
I. What makes them chose the place they want to nest?
II. What could be the number one factor they need to consider?
III. How they are coping with the competition among other insects?
IV. How us humans can be considered as one of the biggest treat to their environment?

This field observation of ant’s community in the park focus in these four questions.

What makes them chose the place they want to nest?

Maybe this is due to the peaceful environment and lesser predator they could have if they chose to place their nest near the streets.

Even though the temperature of the area is a bit cooler it had not much different from the temperature near the street side yet the plants and trees that surrounds them are providing shades for their protection.
Although it is far from humans and may not have as much food as they could have in the open, the area is still abundance of food for they have lesser competitor too.
What could be the number one factor they need to consider?

Many times we are seeing ants at work but never really had throw some attentions with it. You could easily recognize that those ants on a hurry on collecting foods to be terrified over something. But these ants I had encounter are working at peace. I can’t sense any sign of fear from them. Maybe working away from human is really a big factor.
How they are coping with the competition among other insects?

Although they are still expose to some predator like bigger insects, I think it is just fine for at least they could life a life in much natural environment. This allows them to live as they suppose to and do their part in their habitat. After all they are part of that habitat’s food chain.
How us humans can be considered as one of the biggest treat to their environment?
Human interventions strongly affect any natural habitat of an environment. Most of the time we are classified as the number one predators of animals especially with these small species.
These could be reflected base on my observation in that particular area of the park of those ants behavior. Comparing it with the ant colonies living our houses where they are being treated as household pest, those ants from the park are in much better form. It is shown with the peaceful queue while they are gathering their foods.
